RIB vs. Rubber boats
Two concepts that are often confused
An inflatable boat and a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) are both inflatable boats, but there are several differences between the two types of boats:
1. Construction: An inflatable boat is made of an inflatable rubber hull, while a RIB has a fixed hull with an inflatable edge.
2. Stability: A RIB is more stable than an inflatable boat because the fixed hull provides better stability in the water.
3. Speed: A RIB can usually achieve higher speeds than an inflatable boat, due to its stiffer hull and better engine.
4. Use: RIBs are often used in professional and military contexts, while inflatable boats are often used in leisure activities such as fishing, sailing and diving.
5. Price: In general, a RIB is more expensive than an inflatable boat, due to its more advanced design and construction.
6. Maintenance: RIBs often require more maintenance than dinghies as they have more fixed parts that require maintenance and are also more susceptible to hull damage.
